The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk.  These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby.  Less often, a person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or possibly their nose.

The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. YOU CAN STILL GET A FLU VACCINE NOW – IT IS NOT TOO LATE!  Talk to your healthcare provider about getting the vaccine available through their office. Please contact the school nurse if you need help in obtaining a healthcare provider and/or insurance

for your children.

Other preventive measures to follow are:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
  • Stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue, or your elbow, when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
  • Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Practice other good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
  • Please see the Centers for Disease Control website for additional information about seasonal influenza at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/index.htm
  • See the LVJUSD Illness Exclusion Protocol

Clark Conover of Granada High School (GHS) has been named the North Coast Section (NCS) Athletic Director of the Year, by the California State Athletic Directors Association, for his commitment to school athletics. Now in his eleventh year as Athletic Director, Conover has displayed extraordinary dedication and leadership in his role overseeing the 25 athletics programs at GHS. His programs have represented the best in teamwork and character building.

To qualify for the award, candidates needed to have made a significant impact on students' lives and used athletics as a catalyst to achieve some progress in social and cultural environment of the school and community. Philomena Rambo, former principal of GHS, praised Conover for his leadership as athletic director. "His dedication to all students has led to the development of a culture of caring and support that defines Granada athletics," she said. Conover also motivates students to perform in the classroom as well as in their athletic endeavors. "He places a high value on the academic success of students and believes in the concept of a scholarly athlete," said GHS Principal PJ Daley.

Conover has had an enormous impact over the years at GHS; past students and athletes return year after year to pay him a visit. With his enthusiasm and deep involvement in the school, he has encouraged dozens of undecided students to join sports teams and helped to develop a spirited culture throughout GHS to support fellow classmates - instilling a sense of sportsmanship and family to the community. "Clark is one of the most humble, honest, and dedicated people I have had the pleasure to work with," said Daley. "Under his leadership, students not only see an example of what it means to be a great student-athlete, but ultimately what it means to be a better person."
