Athlete of the Week

George Atkinson (GHS Senior RB/DB) has been named "Athlete of the Week" by the Bay Area News Group.  "Atkinson ran for 202 yards and 3 touchdowns and played strong defense in the secondary in the Matador's 28-14 win over host Amador Valley.  The Notre Dame-bound speedster ranks second in EBAL rushing (800 yds) and scoring (86 pts)."  (10/22/10)

George Atkinson to play in the All-American Bowl

"Granada's George Atkinson III was announced as a participant in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.  He'll be a member of the West team at the Alamodome in San Antonio on January 8, 2011 as a defensive back.  The Notre Dame commit has also excelled on offense this season for the Matadors, who are 4-0 and tied for #3 in the Bay Area News Group East Bay poll.  He's rushed for 508 yards and 7 touchdowns on jus 45 carries (11.3 yds/carry) and has caught 6 passes for 191 yds and a touchdown.  Granada's defense is 3rd in EBAL, allowing 255 yds per game, and is fresh off a 21-0 shutout of SRV.  Atkinson was honored with an on-campus ceremony where he was presented with his All-American jersey."  (The Valley Times, 10/7/10)

GHS Remains Undefeated

"After going 3-0 in preseason and earning the #13 ranking in the East Bay, Granada High's football players and coaches didn't really fell they had to legitimize the Matadors.  The did anyway.  With the defense setting the tone and running back George Atkinson rushing for 122 yds and 2 touchdowns, visiting Granada stunned #2 San Ramon Valley 21-0 in both teams' EBAL opener.  The Granada defense, which has shined this season, turned up the heat on the Wolves and their Cal-bound quarterback, Zach Kline.  The Matadors sacked Kline 6 times and kept him to 113 yds passing."  (The Valley Times, 10/2/10)

Granada Erupts for 600 Yards and 56 Points to Outscore Sierra

"The Granada High football team trailed 34-28 early in the 2nd half against host Sierra-Manteca, then scored 4 touchdowns in an 11-minute span to claim a 56-42 nonleague victory.  The game featured more than 1,000 yds of total offense, including 600 by Granada (2-0).  A wild first half ended dramatically, with Granada's Eddie Horn hanging on to a 4-yd touchdown pass from Jeremy Mata on 4th and goal as time expired to tie the game at 28.  Sierra (1-2) then recovered a Granada fumble on the opening kickoff of the 2nd half and scored 3 plays later to take a 6-pt lead.  But it took the Matadors just 2 plays to cover 63 yds on their next possession, taking a 35-34 lead on a Jake Kearney 32-yd run and never looked back.  Granada's George Atkinson caught a 73-yd touchdown pass from Mata for the game's first score, and finished with 114 yds rushing, 141 yds receiving, and 3 total touchdowns.  Mata completed 12 of 23 passes for 256 yds and 2 scores.  Kearney ran for 101 yds on just 3 carries.  Josh Atkinson had a 73-yd touchdown run in the 2nd quarter."  (The Valley Times, 9/11/10)
