Granada Freshman Makes Immediate Impact

"Granada freshman Sophie Hartley experienced quite a first week of competition.  At the Monte Vista Invitational, Hartley produced the 2nd fastest girls time of the day for the hilly 2-mile Oak Hill Park - Danville course to win the freshman race in 12 minutes, 37:06 seconds.  The only girl's time that was faster was a course-record 12:23.19 by a Castro Valley senior.  Hartley improved on that performance Saturday in hot conditions at the 2-mile Ed Sias Invitational at Martinez's Hidden Valley Park.  She won the varsity girls large school race with a time (12:02.5) that ranks 10th all-time for Ed Sias girls races on the course."  (The Valley Times - 9/14/10)

Summers and Novell Stride to Victory in Cross Country Openers

Alex Summers and Carina Novell won their respective races at the season-opening cross country races at the Monte Vista Invitational in Alamo on Tuesday afternoon. Over twenty schools, including 34 harriers from Granada, participated in a series of two mile races organized by grade level.

Alex started conservatively in the Senior Boys race. He passed a number of runners while ascending the steep hill at the beginning of the second mile. With a half mile left to go Alex was in the lead and he sprinted victoriously across the finish line in a course record for a Granada High School runner of 10 minutes and 46 seconds, which was also the fastest time of the day for all 800 runners.

Carina closely trailed the leaders of the Sophomore Girls race right from the start. By the time the girls started to climb the hill she was in second place; at the top of the hill she was in the lead. Carina gradually increased the distance separating her from her pursuers before crossing the finish line in a Granada High School sophomore girls course record of 13 minutes and 31 seconds.

Granada runners earned a total of twelve medals for placing amongst the top fifteen in each of the races. The Sophomore Girls had the strongest performance. In addition to Carina’s victory, Laura Herbeck finished 9th, Alyssa Horning finished 11th and Laura Franklin finished 14th.

The large contingent of GHS Sophomore Boys also ran very well with Kyle Rosemark crossing in 12th place followed in rapid succession by Daniel Replogle in 13th, Tim Oxley in 15th and Justin Agness in 17th.

Other medal winners included seniors Julia Burton and Lara Jansen as well as freshmen Spencer Jeppson and Joe Burton. Juniors Andrew Hill and Brittany Mumford along with freshman Jaime Atchison just missed out on medaling by one or two places.

The cross country runners will be racing again this Saturday at the Ed Sias Invitational in Pleasant Hill where the level of competition will increase to include 40 teams from all over Northern California.
