December 8, 2017 - Livermore, CA - Students at Granada High School (GHS) took first place in the Cybersecurity Pathway and Student Challenge at the Cisco campus in San Jose this week. National Commissioner of CyberPatriot, Brigadier General Bernie Skoch, joined the event in which high school teams demonstrate their problem-solving abilities when faced with a possible cyber attack. Each team was tasked with system hardening of a virtual computer infrastructure and searching for flaws and malware that an intruder could exploit to access information or corrupt the system.

The GHS CyberPatriot Club had the largest attendance at the Cisco Cyber Cup with 18 members competing, split into four teams. Miguel Baez, the club’s coach and Computer Science teacher at GHS, said, “This was a great networking opportunity for the students. They were able to speak to professionals from Cisco, and got a good idea of how this can be a job for them in the future.”

Teams from around the Bay Area competed in a series of challenges over four hours. The winner of the competition was the GHS “Founder’s Team,” comprising the members who started the club last year. Another team from GHS comprising all girls was new to the club this year, and took fifth place in the competition. Other teams from Tri-Valley schools, including a team from Livermore High School, joined the competition.

Baez noted that there were many new members of the club in attendance who performed very well in the competition, setting the stage for what he hopes will be strong performances in the upcoming elimination round competitions. The GHS CyberPatriot Club is only in its second year, and is rapidly growing and competing on a high level. Last year, the Founder’s Team qualified for the Platinum Tier of the CyberPatriot Competition with the top 30% of participants. The National Finalists of the qualifying competitions will compete in Washington D.C. in March.

The CyberPatriot competition is part of the National Youth Cyber Education Program, created by the Air Force Association (AFA) to inspire K-12 students toward careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation's future. For more information on the program, visit www.uscyberpatriot.org.

Granada High School is now in its fourth year as a member of the Challenge Success program which was founded ten years ago by educators and psychologists in partnership with Stanford University.  The goal of the Challenge Success program is to provide schools, students, and families with the “tools they need to create a more balanced and academically fulfilling life for kids.”  The GHS Challenge Success Team made up of school staff, administrators, students, and a parent attended the annual fall conference at Stanford University in September.  The team attended workshops, collaborated with other Challenge Success schools from around the country, and developed an action plan for this school year.  The team is excited for another year of working with staff, students, and families to support student well-being and achievement.  Click on the “Challenge Success” logo on our home page or visit http://www.challengesuccess.org/  to learn more and look out for announcements about upcoming Challenge Success activities this year!

Our Spring Choral Concert is tomorrow, Friday June 2nd at 7:00pm  in the Livermore High School Theater. This concert will feature the combined LHS/GHS Concert Choir (which has grown to 50 students strong), and the LHS Show Choir. The suggested donation is $5 to help support the program, but no tickets or donations are required to attend.

Concert Choir will be performing a varied repertoire that spans over 400 years of choral music history. We'll be performing works from the Baroque and Romantic eras, songs in Latin, English, German and Italian, and contemporary a cappella pop repertoire.

Show Choir will present a set of four contemporary a cappella arrangements centered on the theme "standing up and making a difference," which the class voted on earlier this year. Included in our set will be a performance of LHS senior Johanna Zukowski's own arrangement of "Elastic Heart" by Sia. Johanna will also be conducting the performance on the concert.

Come join us to celebrate the end of the school year with singing! We hope to see you there.

Erika Yang is a junior at Granada High School whose innovation and excellence as a young scientist have earned her, and Livermore, international recognition.  After being the Grand Award Winner at this year’s Alameda County Science and Engineering Fair, and then earning 4th place in the Senior Division at the California State Science Fair 2017, Erika went on to compete at the 2017 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), which took place last week in Los Angeles.

Intel ISEF has been honoring young researchers since 1950. Created and run by Society for Science & the Public, it is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. Now sponsored by Intel, ISEF this year brought together about 1700 students from 78 countries, regions and territories.

Erika’s project - Developing a Novel Flexible MoS2 Biosensor to Detect Lower-Concentrated Area of Biological Molecules at the Femtomolar Level - competing in the Material Science Category, was one of the winners of the Special Award given by Air Force Research Laboratory on behalf of the United States Air Force.

Erika’s work will contribute to medical research, as she has developed a methodology that has the potential to detect cancer at low concentrations at the earliest onset of the disease, which therefore has the capacity to remove the cancer and increase survival rates.

The Board of Trustees and our Superintendent, Dr. Kelly Bowers join me in congratulating Erika. We are very proud of Erika for her outstanding accomplishment and we are proud to be able to honor her today, on Livermorium Day.

We have until April 14th to complete our online Titlewish fundraiser, and we’re 45% to meeting our goal of $5,000. Our fundraiser has an exciting new development: A Granada High School parent has generously offered to match donations, up to $3,000! This has the potential to completely transform our library collection, but we need your help.

If you haven’t had a chance to donate to the fundraiser, you have until Friday, April 14th to contribute. Let’s not lose those matching funds! Visit http://www.titlewish.com/1090738 to donate.

100% of the money we raise will go directly to purchasing new library books for our school library. We will use this money to purchase mostly non-fiction books, as our non-fiction collection is in desperate need of an update.

We’d like to offer a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has already donated! You’re awesome!

Sincerely,

Sherry McGowan

Starting TODAY and ending on April 14th we’re having an online Titlewish fundraiser. 100% of the money we raise will go directly to purchasing new materials for our school library!

We’re asking you to participate and help us raise $5,000. We’re going to use this money to purchase non-fiction books for our school library. Though our fiction collection is in better shape, our non-fiction collection is outdated and could use some fresh, useful books. We will focus our purchases on books related to topics we know students are researching and on popular areas of our collection that need updating. The average price of a library book is $13.00, and we would be so grateful if you would consider donating enough money to purchase a book or two.

To help us meet our goal, please visit http://www.titlewish.com/1090738

and click the Donate button.

Thank you for helping us provide Granada High School students with the best education possible! Our students deserve relevant, exciting books in their school library.
